Welcome to Mystic Liberty Pole and Park mystic flag

For over 160 years, the Mystic Liberty Pole and Liberty Pole Square have served as a gathering place that reflects our shared history, civic pride, and commitment to preserving this important landmark for future generations.

Mystic Liberty Pole

The Liberty Pole originated in 1862, although not at its current location, as a public display of patriotism and a way of drawing people together. It has continued to do so ever since.

Welcome to the website for the Mystic Flag Committee, a non-profit organization made up of resident volunteers, which has oversight of Mystic’s historical Liberty Pole and Liberty Pole Square. We also oversee the placement of American flags along the sidewalks of Mystic on major holidays, with the faithful assistance of Scout Troop 76.

Our tall flagpole is located at the junction of Route 1 and Holmes Street in downtown Mystic, with the adjacent Liberty Pole Square – a small park located next to S & P Oyster Co. It features a historical anchor from a lumber schooner which sank off Cape Cod in 1897, as well as two informational plaques and a monument of major contributors who helped make the Square a reality.

You can learn more about the history of our Liberty Pole and Liberty Pole Square here. Or better still, read a great deal more in our booklet available at Bank Square Books, Mystic’s Liberty Pole: 1862-2012. All proceeds from booklet sales go to the maintenance of the Liberty Pole, Liberty Pole Square and sidewalk flags.

Repairs and maintenance expenses are covered through the contributions of residents and businesses throughout the community. The Mystic Flag Committee is a non-profit organization, and all donations are tax deductible.
